At 11 :30 a, we received a phone telling us that a tank was entering Jerusalem street in Balata camp. 7 members of the International Solidarity Movement ( ISM) went there right away only to discover that the worst was actually going on. 2 Merhawa, 3 jeeps, 1 APC, a bullet proof vehicle were in position against a non existing enemy.
What did these soldiers come there for ? There is no explanation to their presence but one can easily suppose that, since the mise-en-scene has been staged over and over again in the past: They had come there to kill blindly, to terrorise, to abuse, to cause so very much pain. The ISM members did not disturb them at all : They shot at them in the legs, above their heads to make them go.
They killed a 18 years old man, injured 7 other persons- including 3 very badly-As soon as blood had spread out, the UM/PMRC and UHCC ambulances took off to the rescue of the population. Soldiers hidden in their vehicles shot at them too, to prevent them from getting through to the injured. Then, children started to throw stones on this iron made junk ; the only way they have to defend their territory, their home. And that is exactly what the soldiers were waiting for : a confrontation.
They made their war in this already bleeding street ; and it lasted for hours on end. Tear gas grenades: everyone choked; deadening grenades, etc.
By now, there are Apaches or may be M16s. The sky is rumbling. It’s a war taking place in a desert, against lifeless people who go on walking in the street as if nothing was going on: It’s their daily life.
May be we can pretend that we are facing a civilised country, a democratic army, as they send soldiers to fight against children with a massive arsenal ? An arsenal built to annihilate another army that would have missiles, tanks.
What right does Israel have to invade camps and towns where the Palestinians try to live feet and hands tight under siege. At night they are thrown out of bed to be captured, during the day ; they are taken away in the street.
It is immoral, it is horror. Nevertheless, international correspondents do not seem to be any astonished. Their duty is to inform us, to denounce injustice : the daily crimes against civilians. On the contrary, these journalists are not at all interested in what is really happening, and keep it all off the record.
